Travis

“Did you see what that… what that… Look what that thing did?” The man was shrieking, his face turning a bright shade of red as he stomped over to where Owen, Joshua, and I stood. Joshua chuckled as Owen gave a gentle tsk of his tongue. The sound was more like mockery.

He deserved it, Alexis’ strike with her rail had been true and pronounced, happening only minutes into their ‘spar’ and seconds after she had begun to glow with that ember luminance.

“Oh, I saw, Karl. If you haven’t been paying attention, I think she would have done more than cut your uniform,” Owen said, that gentle tsk turning into a dark mockery.

It only infuriated the guy more.

“Aren’t you going to punish her?” Karl continued to rage, pointing back to where Alexis was standing with all of the other Hotheads, Cohen and Jason flanking her. “We can’t let those… those… monsters get away with this.”

“Oh, no one is getting away with anything, I assure you,” Owen said, holding out his hand. Karl looked at it in confusion. Owen signaled again, and after a second Karl reached out, clearly expecting Owen to hand him something.

It all happened so fast that even I wasn't even sure what had happened. Owen grabbed Karl’s hand, turning it over and slicing a knife over the palm. The knife spread his skin with a hiss, thick black blood pouring from the wound. The second the first trace of black blood appeared, Joshua gave a whistle and all of the other Handler’s in the room rushed forward, gripping and unarming and restraining the now raging Karl.

“Take him to room one.” Joshua stepped forward and hit Karl upside the head with what looked like a pair of brass knuckles. Except that when they hit against his jaw a pop of white light flared over his skin like cracked marble. He stopped fighting, sagging in the soldier’s arms as they dragged him out of the room.

“It’ll stop him from shifting, we need to question him,” Owen said, preoccupied with cleaning the blood that had splattered on his sleeve. “I am sure you have questions that you would like answered, Travis.”

He gave me the wicked grin that I had come to associate with Owen years ago.

He was a master at putting on a good face. He always came off as the charismatic leader, and for a brief moment I had thought this side of him had vanished in our years apart. But there it was, hidden this whole time. I hadn’t been kidding when I had warned Lex of his ruthlessness.

“Of course I do. I say it’s time we finish this, friend,” I gave him a nod and his smile flickered into something dangerous before he turned, facing the Hotheads, the picture of eloquence once more.

“Thank you for your help, Alexis,” Owen said, his voice booming. She glared at him, as though she had seen that smile and didn’t approve.

Knowing Alexis, she didn’t.

“He was a bastard anyway!” One of the Hotheads, a girl with a close shorn cut yelled and everyone laughed.
